When is the Best Time to Travel to Maui?Updated: November 8, 2021
When is the best time to travel to Maui, you ask? We always say it’s all the time! Maui stays beautiful year-round, in whatever weather. Still, people have their preferences. So check out our short guide below on the best time to travel to Maui so you can plan ahead and have the best Maui experience.
Maui’s tropical climes are always an attraction for visitors, especially during the winter months. And there are just so many things you can do under the sun! So if you’re going to Maui to catch the sunny weather, you should also know what the weather is like on the island. You wouldn’t want to get caught in the rain if you’re planning to do many outdoor activities, after all.
For the most part, Maui days are sunny and warm. Temperatures average in 70 to 80 F. But because it’s a tropical island, there’s a dry and wet season. So it would not be a sunny everyday type of deal. Rains in Maui typically happen during the winter months, approximately between November to April. And while it’s rainier and cooler during that period, there are still occasional rains that could happen in the summer season. Luckily, they don’t last more than a few minutes. Still, it’s good to be prepared, just in case. There is also a hurricane season from June through November, but Hawaii and its islands are not prone to hurricanes.
High and Low Seasons
If you’re like us, you would want your vacation to be fun but also relaxing. And that means you want to visit Maui when there are fewer tourists. This is also known as the low season. The high season would be the times when the number of visitors is at peak.
Maui gets busy during the summer months because of family vacations. Meanwhile, the winter months are when people want to get away from the cold. The high season also tends to be more expensive. So for fewer people and lesser costs, visit Maui during the spring and fall.
The high season typically falls from mid-January to mid-April for the winter and mid-June to mid-August for summer. Conversely, the low season in Maui would be late April to early June for spring and mid or late August to mid-December for fall.
The most popular things you can do in Maui are available year-round, but some activities are seasonal. For instance, a famous Maui attraction is whale-watching which happens from mid-December to mid-May. However, during the whale season, some water activities like jet skiing or parasailing are prohibited. So if you wanted to do those, you’re better off visiting during summer instead.
Or if you want to go surfing, the winter months bring with them big waves you can catch with your surfboard. However, you can’t go hiking during the winter season due to rain impacting some hiking trails. So make sure to do some research first on your planned activities to set your expectations. There are also events like festivals or cultural events that might be happening around the time of your visit.
